Today, more than a quarter of all marriages in England take place before God in the traditional setting of a Church of England church. You're welcome to marry in church whatever your beliefs, whether or not you are baptised and whether or not you go to church. For more information about marrying in the Astwell Benefice, please contact your Churchwarden/Representative.
Below we have tried to answer some of the most common questions.
Who can get married in the Astwell Benefice?
Until recently you had to live in the parish or get a special license from the Archbishop in order to get married in a parish church. Now, even if you live outside of the parish you can be married there, if you have a significant connection to the church - see the list below.
You may marry in a parish if one of you:
-
has at any time lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months or
-
was baptised in the parish or
-
was prepared for confirmation in the parish or
-
has at any time regularly gone to normal church services at St Peter’s for a period of at least six months or
That one of your parents, at any time after you were born:
-
has lived in the parish for a period of at least six months or
-
has regularly gone to normal church services for a period of at least 6 months or
That one of your parents or grandparents:
-
was married in the parish
Even if you cannot demonstrate any of the above connections, it may still be possible for you to get married here. P
